Piedmont, SC June 18, 2007 The Kelley Motorsports Nitro Funny Car, piloted by Andy Kelley, will meet rookie James Day in the first round of eliminations at the rescheduled Skull Shine Sooner Nationals, set for Saturday, June 23rd, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Last month, after overcoming clutch and tire shake issues during the first several qualifying rounds, Kelley used his last qualifying opportunity to run a clean 5.17 second pass at 296 mph, good enough to claim the sixth position in the original field. However, a steady rain forced the postponement of the elimination rounds, originally scheduled for May 28th.
According to Kelley, “The fans in Tulsa were enthusiastic, and I enjoyed interacting with them and signing autographs between runs. I love to talk racing and they really kept me busy. We can’t wait to get back.”
Now sitting in the fourth qualifying spot, based on the times of the returning competitors, Kelley will attempt to win his first elimination round of the young season, and improve upon his seventh place position in the IHRA Knoll Gas Torco Racing Fuels Pro Nitro Funny Car national points standings.
“We’ve qualified for all three national events this year, but need to start winning rounds if we’re going to achieve our goals for this season,” said Kelley. “Every trip down the track teaches us something new about the car, and we’ve done a lot of work on our clutch setups and added some technology to help with consistency.”
