Epping, NH August 13, 2007 After running a strong 5.10 second pass at 294 miles per hour, Andy Kelley and the Kelley Motorsports Nitro Funny Car took home the “Last Man Standing” award during Saturday night’s qualifying action at the IHRA Amalie Oil North American Nationals at historic New England Dragway. As the “Last Man Standing”, Kelley earned five additional Championship points toward the IHRA Knoll-Gas Torco Nitro Funny Car Championships, in addition to being recognized as the quickest Nitro Funny Car in the field during the Saturday night qualifying session.
“The crazy thing about that run is the car threw the blower belt at about the 1,000’ mark,” said Kelley. “We would have been in the four’s and over 300 miles per hour the way we were moving, but I was thrilled to be Last Man Standing as well as the number two qualifier overall.”
During Sunday’s Eliminations, Kelley was able to parlay the highest qualifying position of his career into a first round defeat of Texan Mitch King before falling to the current points leader Dale Creasy, Jr. in a thrilling semi-final matchup.
“We had the car set up almost the same as we had in the first round when we went 5.23 to beat Mitch King, and the conditions were virtually identical. But this time we lost traction early, as we literally peeled the rubber off the track surface, “said Andy. “It was frustrating because Creasy had traction problems too, and the door was wide open for us to beat the Champ.”
The Kelley Motorsports team will reload, and prepare for the next IHRA national event, the Motor City Nationals in Detroit, MI beginning August 24th-26th. While still seeking his first National Event Championship, Kelley has had a successful season in his first full year competing on the IHRA national circuit, and currently stands in fourth place in the IHRA Knoll-Gas Torco Nitro Funny Car points standings.
